This pot was hand thrown on a pottery wheel using a professional raku clay body. After the first kiln firing, vertical lines were carefully plotted on the surface and masked off before a white glaze was applied.
For the second firing, I used an ancient Japanese process known as raku. The pot was taken out of the kiln at a very high temperature and plunged into a bucket of sawdust. Through the flames and alchemy, the clay surface starts to absorb the carbon smoke and the glaze starts to crackle. The result is a black clay surface and a distinct crackle glaze effect that raku pottery is renowned for.
This vessel is sculptural and is not food safe or waterproof.
