This raku vessel was hand thrown on a pottery wheel using a professional raku clay body. The clay was then left to dry and burnished to a smooth finish.
It was then painted with layers of terra sigillata and buffed to a high shine. This technique has been used to create a delicate finish to clay for thousands of years.
For this pot I added a very fine mineral to the clay that creates an iridescent shine to the surface. The finish is reminiscent of a pearl.
During the raku firing I applied horse hair to create a medley of beautiful marks.
These vessels are sculptural pieces and are not food safe or waterproof.
